Absorene Book and Paper CleanerAbsorene je kouzelná hlinka přímo z rukou knihomolských andělů. I’m only sort of kidding. It comes in a tub and has the consistency of slightly dry play-doh. You remove a small amount and warm it with your hands, then rub the ball in one direction on the pages of the book, or over a cloth bound cover. Its slight magic comes from its ability to remove film left by cigarette smoke, along with some of the smell. It will also remove surface dust, dirt, and smudges. If you’re using Absorene on a board cover and it isn’t working as well as you would like, try Clean Cover Gel, a petroleum-based gel used for cleaning and restoring board covers. Oil StainsThe best way to remove greasy stains from book pages is time and weight. Place a paper towel between each greasy page, then put a book weight on top of the book. Wait a few days, remove the paper towels, and repeat until as much of the grease or oil is gone as possible. If the stain is the result of food spilled on the book, remove that first. SmellsAbsorene should get rid of smoke smells and film, but if the book smells unpleasantly musty you can put it in a container with some unscented kitty litter or baking soda. Don’t let the substance touch the book. Leather BindingsIf you have leather bound books, dust them like you would any other book. If they’re still dirty, the Alabama Department of Archives and History recommends using a small amount of saddle soap and a clean, lint-free cloth to clean the leather. While some people oil their leather books to keep the oil from drying out, most conservators don’t do this anymore (the New York Public Library stopped oiling leather books in the 1960s, for example) because there is no evidence that it prolongs the life of the book and it can lead to staining of the pages and blotchiness of the leather. These are the basic steps for cleaning your books, and you should do so at least once a year- more often if the books are in a damp area, or a high-traffic area where there is a lot of dust and human/pet activity. Already a member? Nakladatelství Alarm vydává další důležitou a nesmírně aktuální knihu. Kniha Etnické čištění Palestiny vyšla už v roce 2006 a i tehdy způsobila takřka celosvětový šok. You probably haven’t given book cleaning a whole lot of thought in the past. You may lightly dust your books as you clean your house or observe your maid service wiping them down with a rag. Is that enough? Do your they really require more cleaning that a light dusting or wiping? The answer may surprise you. Your library of books requires a good cleaning at least once a year. Keeping them well cleaned will greatly extend their lifespan and also keep your house dust and mildew free.If your home library consists of old or rare books, you may wonder if it is safe to clean them without causing further damage. There are several methods to clean books. The more effective the cleaning method, the harsher it may be. You will have to weigh the need for cleaning against the condition and value of the book to determine the cleaning method and how much cleaning you will do.Tools for Cleaning BooksYou will need some general tools for the book cleaning process. Gather up all of your items before beginning the task. If you choose to assign your maid service with book cleaning, ensure they have the correct tools and knowledge as well.Soft cloth or magnetic dusting clothVacuum with dusting brush attachmentPetroleum Jelly (for leather ones)Corn Starch (for mildew)Glass Cleaning Solution (for glossy ones)Absorene dirt eraser (for cloth ones)New soft bristled tooth brushWhite vinyl eraser (optional)Clean the outside of your bookEven the delicate older books can withstand a wipe down. Wipe the outside of each book with a dry soft cloth. If the book is leather bound, you can choose to rub a dab of petroleum jelly over the cover before wiping with the cloth. The leather will come out looking brand new. On a glossy cover, you can use a glass cleaning solution, but make sure to spray the cleaner on a cloth first instead of directly on the cover. For a cloth binding, use Absorene dirt eraser (a Play-Doh-like substance found in art supply stores). Roll it over a surface to pick up dust or rub it like an eraser. If your book is spiral bound, you can bet there will be dust stuck in the binding. You can use the vacuum attachment or a clean soft bristle toothbrush to clean between the spirals.Clean the inside of your bookTo clean the edges of an old book, use a dry dusting cloth. You can also choose to use your vacuum cleaner’s dusting brush attachment as long as you are careful and gentle. Turn the book with the pages facing down and vacuum from the bottom so that dust does not fall into the pages. If pages in your book have marks or stains, you can use a white vinyl eraser to remove them. Move from inside to outside with each stroke to avoid rips. This method only works for dry stains. If there is a wet stain, let it dry first. Never try to remove a wet liquid stain.Sometimes if your books are stored in a damp or humid location, you might notice some mildew on the pages. - A lze opravit i umaštěnou část stránky, třeba i tu, kde k zamaštění došlo někdy v minulosti? Většina z nich napadá papír a další přítomný materiál organického původu (vazební usně, pergamen, pojivá, klížidla, textil atd.). Prach je převážně hygroskopický, a proto má tendenci podporovat růst plísní i destrukční vliv přechodových kovů či kyselin. Další nečistoty v papíru vznikají v důsledku působení lidského faktoru. Vlivem lidské činnosti bývají především na rozích listů knih. ĎUROVIČ, Michal. Restaurování a konzervování archiválií a knih. Praha: Litomyšl: Paseka, 2002. s. 203. ISBN 80-7185-383-6. Restaurování a konzervování archiválií a knih. Praha: Litomyšl: Paseka, 2002. s. 204. ISBN 80-7185-383-6. K odbornějším technikám dále patří čištění knih pomocí vodních systémů či organických rozpouštědel. V případě nanesené špíny na dolní ořízku knihu by mohl pomoci zde zmíněný velmi jemný brusný papír. Our first question when we handle new acquisitions is always, Does it need cleaning? The usual answer is yes. Each of us has a personal definition of dirt. For general book purposes, dirt is whatever doesn’t belong on a book; it’s foreign matter. Dirt obscures beauty. Dirt is not necessarily a passive substance. Cleaning old books and their aging paper can present a conundrum. There are many ways to clean books and ephemera, but the more effective the cleaner, the more abrasive it may be, and the greater the risk that cleaning will cause damage. The patina of age, the well-handled quality of a much-loved old book that has passed through many hands, isn’t what we’re out to destroy anymore than we would alter the appearance of a fine piece of antique furniture; we want to preserve, not update it. A good rule of thumb is this: Surface dirt can always be safely removed, if it’s removed by the least-abrasive means possible. And it should be removed. There’s nothing like a much-laundered tea towel or T-shirt cut up into small cloths. The ideal fabric is lint-free (so it imparts nothing you need to remove later) and light-colored (so you can see what you’re removing, which can be useful as you rate the book’s condition and decide what additional care it needs). If you prefer a commercial product, try one of the electrostatic cloths, such as Swiffer (steer clear of any cloth with scent or other added substances). The electrostatic cloths not only remove surface accumulations, but hold them; using these products make it easier to control where the dirt goes when it leaves the book’s surface. The soft cloth is the only surefire method of cleaning gold leaf. Use this to ease dirt from such delicate areas as spines, edges, stamping and embossing. Dedicate a new, soft toothbrush for the task - with the softest bristles you can find. Keep your used toothbrushes, if you must, for scrubbing grout. The classic eradicator is soft and crumbly, an all-purpose necessity. It works wonders on simple smudges and many more serious blemishes. Resembling a small, dry sponge, this is useful on paper of virtually every type and for countless clean-up tasks. This porous cloth sack, which fits comfortably in the hand, contains pulverized eraser that can work small cleaning miracles. More than dirt and debris respond to this soft and pliable putty. One of our longtime favorites is well-known for getting maximum dirt from old boards. We call it our “Cinderella glop” and wouldn’t be without it. In our opinion, the product has just gotten better, because it’s no longer sold only in quart containers. A quart of Clean Cover Gel goes a long way, especially when you’re learning to use it properly. It’s a good example of less is more. We learned the hard way. Because Clean Cover Gel is pleasant to use - dare we say fun? - we used too much at first, creating a lather when a sheer coating was all that was required. The new, smaller container is good training: Brodart now sells it in 4-ounce plastic jars for $2.95. We’ll discuss the cleaning of leather in a future column. There is nothing quite like flipping through the pages of a beloved book-until you notice the dust, stains, or musty smell that's developed over the years. Don't let a little wear and tear stand in the way of your enjoyment of your favorite books, however! With a bit of tender loving care, you can restore your books to their former glory and keep them in good condition for years to come. Step #1: Make Your Books Smell Fresh and Clean A mildewy smell can make even a good book unpleasant to read. To remove odors, seal your book in a plastic bag with an open box of baking soda, though not in contact with the book. Leave it for a few days, and the offending odor will disappear. If you do see mold, don't ignore it! Place the book in a dry, well-ventilated area and gently brush off spores with a soft-bristled brush. For extra protection, attempt to leave packets that absorb moisture on your bookshelf to prevent issues in the future. Step #2: Wipe Away the Dust and Grime Dust is harmless, but over time, it can seep deep into book pages and covers. Remove dust from covers, spines, and the edges of pages with a soft microfiber cloth or a new, unused makeup brush. A tip-never blow on your books to dust them! The moisture in your breath will cause particles to stick, and then cleaning will be even harder. Step #3: Goodbye Stains Stains do happen, but they don't have to be there for good! Here's how to remove them safely: Covers: A cloth dampened with a bit of mild dish soap works on glossy covers. For leather or cloth covers, use a dry cloth or special cleaner. Pages: Take extra caution when stains are on paper. To erase pencil marks, use a white eraser and erase lightly in one direction. For oily spots, dab them gently with a cotton swab that is slightly moist-never rub, which will spread the stain or damage the page. Step #4: Store Your Books Properly A tidy book collection is only as good as its shelf life. Keep books upright on a cool, dry shelf, away from direct sunlight, to prevent fading. If you have rare or older books, acid-free protective covers will offer an extra layer of protection against dust and damage. For added peace of mind, rotate your books regularly for even wear and to prevent them from warping. Why Book Care Matters Caring for your books isn’t just about aesthetics-it’s about preserving the stories, memories, and knowledge they hold. Whether you’ve got a cherished childhood novel or a rare find from a secondhand shop, a little TLC goes a long way in keeping them in top shape for future reading adventures.
