We loved having such a welcoming place that enabled us to enjoy some beach time with our furry friend. The beach is well equipped and kept tidy and clean; nice dog shower and plenty of water bowls. The price was really reasonable. It is worth the drive if you are in the area with your dog. Small beach with a lot of loungers packed in, but very friendly atmosphere. Paid €28 for two loungers and a parasol. Kids and our dog had a lot of fun despite the small space. Very bad experience, will never go there again. The owner was very unfriendly to us, when she noticed that we were tourists. She made clear that she did not want us there. A fantastic beach for your dogs.
Overlooking the Western Riviera, the town of Pietra Ligure is one of the most popular destinations in western Liguria. Elegant and lively in summer, it is perfect if you are looking for beaches with crystal clear sea and surroundings to explore. Here is a guide on what to see in Pietra Ligure and what to do in the surrounding area. Where is Pietra Ligure Pietra Ligure is located in Liguria, on the Western Riviera, between the municipalities of Loano to the east and Finale Ligure to the west. It is about 80 km from Genoa and 30 km from Savona, and is easily accessible by car or train (the railway station is located a short walk from the centre and the seafront). If you arrive by car, you will find many free or paid parking spaces with hourly rates around the historic centre and the beach (the closest is in Piazzale Flavio Geddo).
What to see in Pietra Ligure Historic centre The ancient heart of Pietra Ligure is a maze of narrow alleys (carruggi), bright little squares and historic buildings. Don’t miss Leale-Franchelli Palace, an elegant example of noble architecture, and Piazza San Nicolò, the town’s main square, overlooked by the Basilica of San Nicolò, the symbol of the village. With its imposing façade, the Basilica of San Nicolò dominates the square and houses Baroque decorations and sacred works of art. It is truly a small artistic gem not to be missed. From the historic centre, with the sea behind you, look up towards the hill in the hinterland and you will see the Doria Castle. In reality, it is a complex of medieval ruins, of which parts of the perimeter walls and some defensive structures are still visible today. If you have half an hour to spare, it is worth taking a short walk uphill to reach it, both to understand the defensive function of the village in medieval times and to admire the view of the village and the coast.
Beaches and seafront The coastline of Pietra Ligure stretches for over 2 kilometres, with beaches alternating between free stretches and private bathing establishments. There are also dog-friendly areas where dogs can swim (for example, the RinTin Beach and Ex Leonessa areas). In summer, like other resorts on the Western Riviera, Pietra Ligure is often awarded the Blue Flag, a symbol of environmental quality of the waters and bathing services. The beach is sandy, mixed with small pebbles in some places, typical of the Ligurian Riviera; the seabed slopes gently, making it perfect for families with children. The most family-friendly beach is the central one because it has more sand (and fewer pebbles), facilities equipped with cabins, showers, bars and toilets, and is easily accessible with pushchairs.
Pietro Toesca Botanical Park Located on the hill overlooking Pietra Ligure, on the slopes of Mount Trabocchetto, this municipal botanical park, with free admission, offers a pleasant walk among local and introduced plant species, with information signs about the plants, a small pond with fish and turtles, and relaxation areas. There is also a small playground for children. To reach it from the historic centre (e.g. from Piazza San Nicolò), you can walk up Via della Cornice or other footpaths leading inland.
Things to do in Pietra Ligure: inland paths A few minutes’ drive takes you from the sea to olive groves. The area around Pietra Ligure is perfect for scenic treks through the fragrant Mediterranean scrub and dry stone walls typical of Liguria. For example, a half-hour drive will take you to the starting point for an easy trek, suitable for children, which leads to the Pian delle Bosse refuge and, if you wish, continues to Mount Carmo di Loano. AsinOlla Families with children may be interested in spending half a day at AsinOlla, a nature park offering activities with donkeys, horses and ponies, slow trekking, first rides and games for children, as well as picnic and barbecue areas with sea views. AsinOlla is located in the hills a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Pietra Ligure (follow the signs for Pian dell’Olio - Travocchetto). Pietra Ligure and inclusivity Finally, we would like to draw attention to Pietra Ligure’s commitment to inclusivity. The presence of the Santa Corona Hospital and, in particular, its Unipolar Spinal Unit (a centre of excellence for the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries) has contributed over the years to transforming the town into a place that is attentive to accessibility. What does this mean in practice? Here you will find a flat seafront, pavements equipped with ramps, well-equipped beach establishments and accessible accommodation facilities. All these features make Pietra Ligure a truly welcoming and wheelchair-friendly (or pushchair-friendly) location. Find your accommodation in Pietra Ligure: ▶
