Průvodce návštěvou Pražského hradu: vstupné, jízdné a tipy pro exkurze

Prague Castle is one of Prague’s most important sights and the largest historic castle complex in the Czech Republic. Older guidebooks often mention “Long Tour” and “Short Tour” tickets. This information is outdated. Entry to the Prague Castle complex itself is free. Basic exterior access includes the castle courtyards and many outdoor viewpoints.

Co je pro návštěvníky nejdůležitější vstup

The most important ticket for visitors is the Basic Tour. Ticket validity: Prague Castle tickets are valid for 2 days. Reduced admission: Usually applies to children, students and seniors according to Prague Castle’s current rules. Important note: St Vitus Cathedral and other buildings may have limited opening hours during services, ceremonies, state events, security measures or special occasions. Tickets can be purchased at the Prague Castle information centres in the Second Courtyard and Third Courtyard. There are Prague Castle information centres where visitors can buy tickets, get maps and ask about current opening hours.

If you want more context, consider a guided tour. Older guidebooks mention specific old guided-tour prices. There are ATMs in and around the Castle area, but for currency exchange it is generally better to use reputable exchange offices in the city centre and avoid poor-rate tourist exchanges. The nearest metro station is Malostranská, but walking from there involves a steep climb up the Old Castle Stairs.

Praktické informace pro 2026

Important 2026 transport update: From 21 March to 17 July 2026, tram service is suspended at the Pražský hrad and Královský letohrádek stops because of tram track reconstruction. For a first visit, allow at least 2.5 to 3.5 hours for Prague Castle. For most visitors, the Basic Tour is the best choice. Choose the Permanent Exhibitions ticket only if you are especially interested in castle collections, museum displays and deeper historical context. If you have limited time, walk the free courtyards and buy the Basic Tour only if you want to enter the key interiors.

Since 1962, Prague Castle with its archaeological findings has been registered as the National Cultural Monument No. Beginnings of Prague Castle are connected with the first historically documented member of the Přemyslid family, Bořivoj. In the 880s, he transferred his original seat from Levý Hradec to a place where there had already been a Slavic settlement on the hill above the Vltava River with a very advantageous position. The first princely palace was probably made of wood. The fist stone building and the oldest Christian sanctuary was the Virgin Mary Church. Its remains were found between the second courtyard and the Bastion Garden (Na Baště). This church of Bořivoj was soon re-built by prince Spytihněv I, who was buried here in 915.

Další poznámky

Some sections mention that skip-the-line tickets may be sold by third parties for less than 20 euros, but this typically involves a guided tour arrangement. The Visitor Pass and Prague Card also include admission to Prague Castle and often claim that you won’t have to stand in line if you buy their products. This is slightly misleading, as you will still have to queue to enter individual attractions; the only line you’ll skip is the ticket office one. The Prague Visitor Pass does have an information center where you can collect your tickets before heading to the attractions covered by the pass. Prague Castle gets the most crowded around noon. The reason for that is the main change of guards that takes place at 12 pm at the Giant's Gate. If you want to visit the interiors with the least amount of people, we suggest visiting at 1 pm. Get the tickets in the morning, see the change of the guards at 12 pm, and then visit the interiors. You can buy the tickets physically in Prague Castle. There are multiple ticket offices, just choose the one with a shorter line.
